Dipsea Workshop Recap

Last night I attended Dipsea’s Erotica Writing Workshop. It was so much fun. If you’re not familiar with Dipsea, it’s an woman-owned app that offers audio erotica and spicy audiobooks. This was their first workshop.

We learned a little bit about what Dipsea focuses on for their short form erotica. And then we broke the genre of erotica down into three key ingredients: voice, desire, and tension. We did short writing exercises for each of these ingredients.

At the end, we combined our voice, components of our core desires, and tension by doing one final writing exercise. We had to write with constraint, starting in the middle of a scene right when the tension was building.

I will admit, I completely blanked for the first five minutes of our fifteen minutes free write. But I finally landed on an idea, rewriting the moment that two of my characters, Owen and Maia, hook up for the first time. This is from a novel I wrote probably three years ago. I still think about rewriting it, but there are so many other projects occupying my energy at this time. Anyways, to set it up, Owen is teaching a figure drawing class and when his model cancels last minute, his best friend, Maia, offers to fill in. Here is the scene- mind you. This is exactly as I wrote it for the class, it hasn’t been cleaned up or polished in anyway. And I think, since it was for a writing exercise, it’s best I keep it that way.
